PROVINCETOWN, MASSACHUSETTS, WHERE O'NEILL MADE HIS DEBUT AS A PLAYWRIGHT IN 1916 AND WHERE PLAYWRIGHTS THEATER GAVE ITS FIRST PERFORMANCES IN 1994.
The mission of Playwrights Theater of New York is "to explore the life and plays of Eugene O'Neill to inspire new work." This exploration is built on our flagship project of presenting O’Neill’s 50-play canon chronologically, 21 to date. THE O'NEILL STUDIO- Now in it's 20th year, The Playwrights Theater O’Neill Studio is an alternative career and training resource that was founded at Yale University that has since taken root in NYC. Just as young Eugene O’Neill was inspired by his own literary mentors, Strindberg and Ibsen, The O'Neill Studio positions Eugene O’Neill, America’s only Nobel Prize-winning playwright, as the inspiration of young playwrights and actors.
The Studio has helped launch the careers of highly successful playwrights and actors through our sessions in NYC and at Yale. In them, scores of young theater artists have been motivated to emulate O’Neill as a model of artistic integrity, expression and process.
The O’Neill Studio seeks to give young playwrights and actors a leg up in these two of the most demanding careers imaginable by fostering an environment of mentorship in sessions led by artistic director Stephen Kennedy Murphy, who studied acting with Sanford Meisner at The Neighborhood Playhouse and apprenticed as a director to Frank Corsaro at The Juilliard School.
Murphy, "a director of opera and theatre with a powerful voice” (NY Times) has staged 21 O’Neill plays, including three premiers, in venues On and Off-Broadway, at Lincoln Center and at Yale University, among others.

The Studio explores O’Neill’s creative beginnings through the biographical lens of Murphy’s mentor Arthur Gelb, a former managing editor of The New York Times whose books co-written with his wife, Barbara, are the foundation of Playwrights Theater’s exploration of O’Neill.
Alumni playwrights include Tarell Alvin McCraney (Oscar for Moonlight) through our Yale-sponsored O'Neill Studio Retreat in Provincetown. Alumni actors include Lucille Lortel Award-winner Tracee Chimo (Bad Jews, Orange is the New Black) and Kristoffer Polaha (Mad Men, Life Unexpected).
